What do I need to participate?

A positive attitude, willingness to learn, and passion for video games are good start, but you should also have some of the following skills:

Can I still participate if I don’t know how to write code?

  • ability to write code or work with a game development platform
  • graphic artistic experience (if you are working on visual elements of a game)
  • sound editing experience (if you are working on audio elements)

Yes! The great thing is that all of these things can be learned, some quickly, some not so much. Before you jump in, you should watch this excellent video by the fine folks at Extra Credits

You can watch several of the Extra Credits videos to get a handle on some of the topics, or jump right into a really great starting point if you want to learn how to make a video game using Unity3D!

In addition to Unity there are many free and paid tools to build video games

  • Unreal
  • GameMaker
  • Construct
  • Godot

What if I don’t know how to make art or sound for a game?

There are tons of options if you don’t think your artistic abilities are up to the challenge.

There are free game art assets that you can download and use, as well as a range of paid options. You can use these in some game jams, but doing so usually means that you have to opt out of scoring for visual components.
